Problems With Mold? Focus On These 5 Factors

Mold is one of the most common causes of indoor allergies. It can lead to asthma attacks, respiratory problems and other allergic reactions. Mold can’t exist without moisture, so you can effectively clear out your problems with mold by controlling moisture in your home. If you are experiencing problems with mold, here are five moisture control tips you should focus on to get rid of it.

  1. Clean up existing mold. While source prevention is vital to controlling problems with mold, you must first do away with any existing mold on tiles, wood, carpet or any other surface where moisture has led to mold growth.
  2. Fix leaks. Pipes under the sink and running behind the walls could be leaking, which provides the moisture mold needs to thrive. Fix these leaks to get rid of mold issues.
  3. Reduce indoor humidity. In the summer when moisture runs rampant, use a dehumidifier to bring the indoor relative humidity to between 30 and 60 percent, and use the bathroom and kitchen vents to suck humidity out while showering or cooking.
  4. Wipe off wet surfaces. Get in the habit of wiping down the shower or tub after showering or bathing to discourage mold growth.
  5. Prevent condensation. By adding insulation to the walls and attic of your home, you can prevent condensation on surfaces such as windows, pipes, tile floors and exterior walls. Keeping these areas dry year-round is important if you’re trying to avoid problems with mold.

These tips for handling mold issues should help homeowners get rid of the nasty stuff. Remember, mold can grow just about anywhere in your home if water is allowed to linger.
