Don’t Let A Power Surge Damage Your HVAC System

Don't Let A Power Surge Damage Your HVAC SystemDid you know that one big power surge – or a series of smaller ones – can cripple your HVAC system, leading to costly repairs or even replacement of expensive equipment?

The most common type of power surge is a lightning strike, but other, less obvious surges happen all the time. These usually smaller spikes in voltage can be caused by a number of things such as faulty power company equipment, downed power transmission lines, transformer problems and even other electrical equipment in your home – refrigerators, freezers, etc., cycling on and off.

Power surges can damage or destroy equipment. It’s even possible for a power surge to result in damage to your home’s entire electrical system. A surge protection device senses excess power and diverts the power away from the equipment to ground, where it can do no harm.

A surge protection device can protect your equipment for a fraction of the repair/replacement cost. In addition, you won’t suffer the inconvenience of losing your climate control. There are two types of surge protection devices for residential use:

Service entrance type: located at the main electrical panel or electric meter, this device will protect all incoming wiring (electrical, cable, telephone, Internet, satellite dish, etc.) from major power surges.

Point-of-use type:  plugged into the wall or mounted at or near the device to be protected, this device will protect only the equipment connected to it.

The type of device you choose and the installation method will depend on the specific equipment in your home. Your HVAC contractor can help you decide which option is best for you.
