Service entrance type: located at the main electrical panel or electric meter, this device will protect all incoming wiring (electrical, cable, telephone, Internet, satellite dish, etc.) from major power surges.

Point-of-use type:  plugged into the wall or mounted at or near the device to be protected, this device will protect only the equipment connected to it.
