Whether it’s summer or winter, it’s important to have a smoothly  operating cooling and heating system. It’s also important to save energy, and make sure that HVAC system is operating at peak performance. Even if you have an energy-efficient system, it might still be wasting energy if you’re not using it correctly. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to help your A/C run more efficiently. Here are three tips to help boost HVAC performance:

1. Install a programmable thermostat. These can be bought inexpensively and can save you up to 30 percent off your energy bill. A programmable thermostat allows you to use more energy-efficient settings when you’re not at home or when you’re sleeping, and cool down the house thoroughly only when you’re around to enjoy it. The newer programmable models are equipped with “smart” technology features designed to maximize energy savings.
2. Duct sealing and insulation. Air leaks in ductwork mean a loss of energy. The more air leaking out between the cooling and heating equipment and the rooms that are meant to be conditioned, the harder the equipment has to work, and the more energy gets consumed. Leaking ducts can lead to an increasing energy loss over time unless sealed with metal tape or mastic sealant. Insulating ducts also helps boost HVAC performance, especially where ducts run through unconditioned areas such as crawl spaces and attics.
3. Regular maintenance. This is a very simple way to improve HVAC performance, but it’s something many people neglect. An air conditioner or furnace that isn’t properly maintained will work harder and use more energy, while not delivering as good of performance. Change your air filter as often, especially during high-use seasons, to prevent it from getting clogged and to maintain optimal airflow. Have your trusted HVAC technician do an annual inspection of your system, as well, making sure that there’s no dirt or debris in the fan or any other components, that your A/C or heat pump has the proper refrigerant charge, and that everything is working properly.
