5 Easy Ways to Make Your Home Dust-Proof

5 Easy Ways to Make Your Home Dust-Proof Achieving a dust-proof home requires a diligent and committed house-cleaning regime, combined with products designed to simplify the process. Most of the dust inside your home comes from fibers, dust mites, pet dander and pollen. Eliminating as many of these sources as possible can gradually help you attain a home relatively free of dust and the discomfort it causes.

  • Keep your HVAC system’s air filter clean. Whenever your system runs, it pulls air through the filter and traps some of the dust in the air. The amount and size of the particle it can trap depends on the type of filter. Consider a high efficient filter replacement or system to improve the filtering process. Ask your HVAC professional for information regarding a custom filtration system to serve your exact needs.
  • Use HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) bags inside your vacuum cleaner. Such bags can hold offending particles that trigger allergies and asthma. Dust mites thrive in fabrics, including bedding, carpeting and furniture. Vacuuming with a unit that has a HEPA bag or filtration system can gradually reduce your indoor dust load. Combining HEPA filtration with dust-proof mattress and pillow covers can also help you achieve a dust-proof home.
  • Opt for hard-surface flooring when you need to replace carpets. Carpets absorb more dust than anything else in your home. However, if you need or want carpeting, choose ones with short pile textiles.
  • Dampen your dusting cloth and mop before you start to clean, or use microfiber cleaning cloths. Dusting and sweeping with dry tools can actually spread dust around. In contrast, microfiber cloths can attract and hold onto dust easily. They’re also washable and reusable.
  • Keep closet floors uncluttered. Closets harbor a good deal of dust, and when it’s easy to vacuum or clean your floors, you can eliminate some of the raw materials from which dust forms.
