Kids Back in School? Now’s the Time to Enjoy Energy Savings

Kids Back in School? Now's the Time to Enjoy Energy SavingsHaving the kids home for summer can be a lot of fun, but it also means that you have to run the A/C quite a bit to keep the house cool when the house is occupied every day. However, when the kids hit the books again and head to class each day, there are some ways you can take advantage and reduce your energy bills. Use this guide to help you enjoy back-to-school energy savings – even if you spend the cash you save on school supplies.

  • Change the temperature in your house may help you with energy savings. That means cranking up the thermostat a few degrees during the day, while you’re still using the A/C, and then reducing it the same amount when the heating season starts. Use a programmable thermostat to bring the temperature back to a comfort level before everybody starts to get home in the afternoon or evening. You could save up to 10 percent on your bills just by installing a programmable thermostat.
  • Manage curtains, blinds and drapes to your advantage. While it’s still warm outside, close them in the afternoon. When it starts getting cold, open up your curtains and blinds to enjoy solar warmth in the afternoons.
  • Unplug all of the appliances that your kids were using during the summer but don’t have time to use now that they’re back in school. Items like DVD players, TVs and video game consoles can use energy even in standby mode. Unplug phone chargers when they’re not in use, too.
  • Get your HVAC system checked out. You’ve been running the A/C all summer long, and pretty soon you’re going to need to turn up the heat to make the house comfortable. Getting a maintenance inspection for your heating and cooling systems will help ensure that everything is working properly as fall changes to winter.
