If you  find that your geothermal system is not operating properly, there’s no need to panic. Though most geothermal system issues should be handled by a professional, you can try a few things before calling a professional to diagnose the problem.
A few DIY options

While you’re waiting for the HVAC technician to arrive, try these simple steps:

• Check the thermostat – If the system isn’t turning on, make sure that the thermostat is set correctly. To work properly, it will need to be switched to either “cool” or “auto.” Also check to see if the temperature you’ve selected is either above or below the temperature in the room.
• Try to force it to turn on – Move your thermostat either all the way up or all the way down. If it still doesn’t turn on, you may have a problem that can only be solved by a professional. (Don’t forget to turn it back to the proper temperature or turn it off entirely.)
• Check the air filter and registers – If you’re experiencing low airflow, your system filter may be dirty, which would require replacement. Another possibility is that a register is obstructed in some way.
• Investigate the fuse box – If the system suddenly stops working, you might have blown a fuse. Check the fuse box and see if it has been tripped.
• Look at the power connect switch – You’ll want to do this on both the indoor and outdoor units.
• Check for digging – While this is a long-shot, look outside to make sure that there’s no digging or excavating occurring on your property that might interfere with the geothermal system’s ground loops.

Your geothermal system is an amazing piece of technology, and typically runs without incident. However, if something does go wrong, geothermal system issues should be handled by someone with the expertise to address the problem competently and promptly. An HVAC technician will evaluate your system and advise you of the specific steps needed to rectify the problem and avoid issues in the future. And as with any other home HVAC system, annual maintenance is the best way to avoid geothermal system issues from arising.
