Looking to Lower Your Heating Bills This Winter? Some Pointers for Winter SavingsResidents of Kansas know better than anyone what it’s like to suffer through a bitterly cold winter. Staying warm in your home while the cold rages outside is probably a major priority for most during the heating season. Unfortunately, a toasty home can be very expensive, and if you’re wondering how to lower heating bills without sacrificing comfort, these tips can help you do just that.

Schedule HVAC Maintenance

The energy efficiency of your heating system depends on annual preventive maintenance. Over the course of the heating season, connections loosen, dust builds up on essential components and other normal wear occurs. An annual tune-up by a qualified professional will increase system efficiency lower your heating bills, extend the operating life of your equipment and prevent dangerous carbon monoxide presence.

Seal Air Leaks

Air leaks make your heating system work overtime to replace lost heat and compensate for the infiltration of cold air. Use weatherstripping and caulk to seal air leaks around windows and doors, along baseboards and around gaps in recessed lighting fixtures and service entrances.

Insulate the Attic

Inadequate attic insulation is a major culprit when it comes to high energy bills. Shore up the insulation in your attic to at least 15 inches of R-38 insulation. Properly insulating the attic will also help prevent ice dams, which can cause serious water damage in your home.

Seal and Insulate Ductwork

Leaky ducts result in considerable air loss and increased energy costs. Seal loose joints in the ductwork with mastic sealant, and insulate ducts in the attic, basement and other cold spaces to prevent warm air from cooling down as it moves through.

Replace the Air Filter

A dirty filter restricts airflow and lets dust pass through, which can build up inside the system. Dirt and poor airflow can considerably reduce system efficiency, so check your filter monthly and install a new one when the old one is dirty.

For the best filtration, consider a high efficient box filtration for reliability and performance
