Preventive Boiler Maintenance Keeps Your System Running All Winter Long

Preventive Boiler Maintenance Keeps Your System Running All Winter LongIf you have a boiler heating system in your Kansas City home, preventive boiler maintenance is key to keeping your heating system operating safely and without interruption all winter long. Without preventive maintenance, your boiler system could break down, requiring time without heat in your home and expensive repairs.

According to the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, 78 percent of all boiler problems occur due to improper maintenance, operator error or low water condition. You can prevent most of these problems from occurring by having a qualified service technician inspect and make minor adjustments to your boiler system each year. In addition to an inspection by a qualified technician, there are a few steps you can take on your own to prevent boiler problems throughout the winter. Use the following checklist to ensure your boiler is operating at maximum safety and efficiency:

  • Always make sure the boiler room is clean and free of dirt and debris.
  • Check all air openings and vents for blocks or debris stuck in the opening. Remove any contaminants from these vents.
  • Make sure the boiler water level is at the correct level at all times. Check these levels once a month or more often for safety.
  • Test the water cutoff valves and safety valves to ensure they are working properly in case of emergency.
  • If you suspect serious problems with the unit, or identify strange contaminants in or around the unit, contact a professional right away. Trying to repair these issues on your own may cause additional problems to the boiler.
