There are many features you can add to your HVAC system to improve its performance in your home. Installing ultraviolet (UV) germicidal lights not only will help your heating and cooling systems sustain high efficiency, it can significantly improve the quality of your indoor air.

How They Work

There are many microorganisms in indoor air, some of which are harmful to people. Viruses, bacteria, mold, mildew and other germs can all cause discomfort and trigger allergies or respiratory issues if not removed from your home’s airflow.

When ultraviolet light comes in contact with most of these organic particles, it destroys them by breaking down their DNA. Instead of simply removing them as an air filter would, UV lights eliminate the hazard altogether. This germicidal technology is used in food processing, clean rooms, labs and hospitals to keep the environment as pristine as possible.

Putting UV Lamps in Your Home

If you’re looking to improve air quality in your Kansas City area home, you can arrange to have UV lights installed in the ductwork to continually treat the airflow as it circulates through your duct system. This will eliminate many of the microorganisms suspended in your home’s air. The only maintenance required in the majority of cases is to replace the bulbs once a year. Your second option is to have your HVAC technician install UV lights so they shine directly on the systems indoor components, including the evaporator coil and condensate pan. These damp, dark areas are welcoming environments for mold and bacteria to settle and grow. This impedes the heat exchange process that’s fundamental to air conditioning. When used to eliminate micro-organic growth on internal A/C and heat pump components, the bulbs only need to be replaced every two years, as they will do a good enough job even if not operating at full efficiency.
