Consider Water Heater Options That Merit the Energy Star for Your Overland Park Home

Consider Water Heater Options That Merit the Energy Star for Your Overland Park HomeWhen you buy a water heater for our Kansas City area home, it’s important to choose the type of heating technology that’s best suited for your situation. For the best performance and energy-saving qualities, you’ll want to consider options that have been approved by the federal Energy Star program. Here are five Energy Star qualifying water-heating options:

  • High-efficiency gas-fueled storage tank water heater: This is a good option if you’re replacing a regular gas-fueled storage water heater and are basically happy with that sort of system, but wouldn’t mind increasing your energy savings via better efficiency.
  • Whole-home gas tankless water heaters – reduces water heating bills by about 30 percent and is ideal if you want a water heater with a long lifetime, or if you have limited space. The disadvantages are the additional cost of installation, the need for a dedicated natural gas line, installation of additional venting, and increased maintenance costs.
  • Gas condensing water heaters – reduces water heating bills by about 30 percent and is ideal if you are consistently running out of hot water. The disadvantages are the additional cost of installation and the space required for venting and a condensation drain.
  • Heat pumps – it can reduce water heating bills by about 50 percent and is ideal if you want to replace an existing electric heater or if you’re building a new house. The disadvantages are the cost of installation and the space needed for a condensate drain.
  • Solar water heaters – it’s ideal if you have dependable access to sunlight and if you want to take advantage of renewable energy to heat your water. The disadvantages are the need for additional maintenance and the installation of gas or electric storage water heaters for back-up.
