Your Overworked Air Conditioner Could Use an Assist

Your Overworked Air Conditioner Could Use an AssistIf you run your air conditioner 24/7 during the sweltering Kansas City summer, chances are your system will lose some efficiency over the course of the season. These tips will help you take a load off of your overworked air conditioner to ensure it effectively cools your home all summer long.Maintain your system

  • Annual preventive maintenance by a qualified HVAC technician will increase your system’s efficiency, extend its operating life, lower your cooling costs, and help prevent common air conditioning problems later in the summer.
  • A clean air filter is essential for proper air flow and to protect your system from dust buildup, which can result in the premature failure of essential components. Check your filter every month, and replace it when it’s dirty.
  • Keep the space around your indoor unit free of dust, which can build up on the evaporator coil, fan and motor.
  • Be sure to contact your professional’s at Overland Park Heating and Cooling if your system seems sluggish or is not cooling well.

Help your home stay cool

  • Seal air leaks to prevent cool air from escaping and warm air from entering. Caulk around stationary components of windows and doors, and apply weatherstripping between movable parts. Use expandable caulk to seal gaps around service entrances, pipes and vents that protrude through exterior walls.
  • Seal loose joints and cracks in your ducts with mastic sealant or metal tape. Insulate your ducts in unconditioned spaces such as the attic and crawlspace.
  • Use ceiling and room fans to help you feel cooler.
  • Don’t operate heat-generating appliances during the hottest part of the day. Save the dishes and laundry for early mornings or evenings.
  • Keep your window shades closed during the day to help combat heat gain from the sun’s energy striking your home.
